Meredith Ashy bumps the ball over the net in the third set of the Bobcat's four set win over Western Michigan last year. Ashy was named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of The Week.

Volleyball Notebook: Bobcats wind down after strenuous week

The Bobcats pause to assess themselves before another three game series in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Bobcats finally have a moment to catch their breath.

In a span of nine days, Ohio played seven matches -- four of which were against opponents from power-five conferences.

After a momentous victory over the nationally-ranked Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington Sept. 1, Ohio finds itself traveling to the Bluegrass State once again this weekend.

Here are a few things to keep in mind before Ohio competes in a three-game series this weekend versus Seton Hall, Utah and host Louisville.

Grit and grind

Coach Deane Webb emphasized to his players that it’s essential to define who they are as a team.

This weekend at the Bobcat Invitational, Ohio did just that. In a highly anticipated home event against Xavier, the Bobcats went down two sets before clawing back to win in the fifth set in front of a packed crowd in the Convo.

Also in the first match of the invite, seniors Abby Gilleland and Meredith Ashy distinctly displayed their efforts. Both senior leaders dove after re-directed balls throughout the three sets, and even with the Bobcats in the lead.

On one occasion -- Webb shuddered when it occurred -- Gilleland slid directly into the scoring table after attempting to corral a deflection.

The bang resulting from her crash was not only heard, but also demonstrated an example of the "hard-working persona" the Bobcats strive for.

Confidence is key

The American Volleyball Coaches Association recently released its Top 25 poll. Ohio was listed, receiving 20 total votes, and is quietly creeping toward a national ranking.

It’s not common for teams from the Mid-American Conference to be listed this early in the season among other elite volleyball programs, so the Bobcats should feel good about receiving recognition from coaches around the country.

Ohio was ranked towards the end of 2014 before being knocked out of the MAC Tournament by Western Michigan. Hopefully, this year's team won't share the same fate.
