Ohio junior outside hitter Mallory Salis goes up for a kill against Miami during their MAC game at the Convo on September 26, 2015.

Volleyball Notebook: Ohio atop East Division after first week

Ohio appears to be best team in Mid-American Conference as conference play is underway.

Ohio (12-3, 2-0 in the MAC) kicked off its Mid-American Conference schedule with wins over Bowling Green and Miami. The wins increased the Bobcats' regular season conference win streak to 26, with their last loss on Oct. 13, 2013.

The rest of the conference also kicked off its respective schedule, as the teams begin the road to the conference tournament, which will be held at The Convo in November.

DESPITE POOR RECORD, HUSKIES START STRONG

Northern Illinois came into the weekend with a feeble 4-8 record, yet it picked up a 3-1 win over Central Michigan and swept Eastern Michigan.

The Huskies were preseason favorites in the early preseason polls, as they were selected to win the MAC West Division and selected to finish as runner-ups behind the Bobcats in the conference tournament.

DEFENDING MAC CHAMPIONS START SLOW

Despite winning the conference last year and being selected as West division runner-ups this year, it has been a poor start for Western Michigan. The Broncos are now 5-12 after splitting their two contests this weekend.

The Broncos earned a win over Eastern Michigan, but lost in five sets to Central Michigan.

A LOOK AROUND THE EAST

It may be incredibly early, but Ohio is atop the East Division — and comfortably so. Their biggest competitor will most likely be Miami, who it defeated this past weekend.

The RedHawks are 9-6 overall with a 1-1 record in the MAC. Miami earned its big win early in the season, sweeping Michigan State, who was nationally ranked at the time.

UP NEXT FOR THE BOBCATS

Ohio will head to Kent State for its first road trip of the conference schedule, a matchup with the Golden Flashes at 7 p.m., on Thursday. They’re 7-7 on the season, after earning a win over Bowling Green and falling to Miami this past weekend.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"It was great to go 2-0 this weekend. Any time you get conference wins, it's a great thing. It's one of those where sometimes you'll say a great loss is better than a bad win, but not in conference. In conference, it's all about wins. Tonight, it was an interesting game. I look at the stats, and on paper it looks like we dominated,” coach Deane Webb said.
