President Roderick McDavis speaks at the Student Senate meeting on Oct. 7, 2015.

Ohio University Student Senate proposes resolution to fill environmental affairs commissioner seat

After remaining vacant for nearly a month, the environmental affairs commissioner seat could be filled by Logan Stark if Wednesday’s resolution passes.

Student Senate will attempt to appoint several people to fill empty seats Wednesday, including the Environmental Affairs Commissioner position that’s been vacant since Sept. 17 when six members of the body resigned.

Last spring, the body voted to make the environmental committee a full senate commission. The group’s first commissioner, Grant Stover, was among the members who resigned.

The senate body will vote during Wednesday's meeting to appoint Logan Stark, who is a senate intern, to the position.

“I’m strangely obsessed with the environment, and single-use plastics is what I’m focusing on right now,” Stark said. “I’m hoping to incorporate the other environmental student organizations to do this pledge with me and student senate to not use single-use plastic for two weeks — that includes plastic utensils, plastic bags and plastic bottles.”

Senate will also aim to fill a senator position and appoint three delegates. Resolutions to appoint Brittany Moore as graduate student senator, Mica Smith as international affairs commission delegate and Emily Hill and Cassidy Paul as women’s affairs commission delegates will be presented Wednesday.

Both Stark and Paul began the semester as senate interns, senate Vice President Jared Ohnsman said.

“They kind of know a little bit more about how senate functions, so they’re a little more prepared when they come in for an interview,” Ohnsman said of interns who applied for senator and commissioner positions.

Additionally, the body will hear presentations from the Office of Information Technology’s Chief Information Officer Craig Bantz, Vice Provost for Global Affairs and International Studies

Lorna Jean Edmonds, and Managing Attorney of the Center for Student Legal Services, Pat McGee.

McGee will be giving a presentation that is a combination of information about the center for legal services and information about his campaign for city council. He’s running as an independent candidate in November’s election.

He said he hopes senate will “see the center for student legal services as kind of a resource on campus.”

“We’re actually a byproduct of student senate,” McGee said. “We’d like to stay in touch with students and answer any questions they may have about our office.”
