OU President Roderick McDavis speaks at the Student Senate meeting Oct. 7.

Ohio University Student Senate to increase representation of students involved with Center for International Studies

A resolution proposed at Wednesday’s meeting will attempt to better represent students involved with the Center for International Studies by appointing a Center for International Studies senator

Ohio University Student Senate will aim to better represent students involved in global studies, international studies and related certificate programs offered through the Center for International Studies at its meeting Wednesday.

A proposed resolution will attempt to create a Center for International Studies senator position under the College of Arts and Sciences, and, if passed, a resolution to appoint Brooke Siggers to fill that position will follow.

Siggers, a sophomore studying global studies and political science, said one of her goals, if appointed, will be “recruiting more people and encouraging more people to study abroad, because not very many people do it, but it sets you apart a lot.”

Another resolution aims to fill the College of Arts and Sciences senator position vacated by Hayley Oliver more than a month ago when six members of senate resigned following the failure of a resolution that favored “direct democracy.”

If passed, the resolution will appoint Nicole Riker, a junior studying history pre-law, to fill the position.

“I think with anything there’s going to be kind of a learning period where I’m going to have to be doing a lot of listening, learning, asking questions and figuring out the scope of my responsibilities, said Riker. “I think this would be a really great opportunity to help students who are marginalized or underrepresented to have a voice.”

Additionally, the body will hear a resolution to send representatives to the Ohio Student Government Association. Senate has traditionally neglected to make appointments to the OSGA, according to the resolution.

Universities including Bowling Green, Kent State, Toledo and Akron send representatives to OSGA conferences, Landen Lama, senate’s lead parliamentarian, said. OGSA is a representation of university student governments "working for the betterment of the student experience," according to its website.

“We want to get projects done and there are a lot of other universities who are doing the same thing,” Lama said. “OSGA is trying to create a system where there’s an archived system of resolutions passed by student governments in one system so other ones can pull from it and really make meaningful work.”

Also taking place at Wednesday’s meeting are resolutions that will be proposed to appoint an off-campus senator and a women’s affairs senator.

Michael Williford, OU's associate provost for Institutional Accreditation as well as senate president Gabby Bacha will give presentations at Wednesday's meeting.
