Black Sheep Improv to combine musical talent with improvisation skills in Thursday show

Black Sheep Improv is bringing back its musical improvisational show Thursday in Baker Center Theatre.

Members of Black Sheep Improv are used to performing improvisational comedy, but Thursday’s show will throw in a different twist: They’ll randomly have to start singing their improv.

The show will be at 9 p.m. in Baker Center Theatre.

The improv group will be hosting a musical improv event, in which the cast members will entertain the audience by incorporating singing into its regular comedic act.

“It’s still normal improv, and everything is totally made up,” Gabbi Thacker, a member of Black Sheep Improv, said. “The only difference is that we’ll have a person playing an acoustic guitar or a piano, and they’ll add another element to the show.”

The show will begin with the cast performing a regular scene, then music will start to play at any moment and the cast members must begin performing musically, Chase Montavon, president of Black Sheep Improv, said.

Black Sheep first did its musical show last year, Montavon, a senior studying communications, said. He added that it went “really well,” so the group decided to bring it back.

Thacker, a senior studying media arts and studies, also participated in the musical last year and said it sometimes was difficult to perform with the mindset that the songs must rhyme. She added that it is easier to perform with the mindset that the performers can make up whatever they want, with the music providing an emotional background to the scene.

“(Music) actually makes (improvisation) easier,” Montavon said. “Once you’re singing, it kind of just gives you an emotion, and it makes it easier to play the scene off of that. … (The show) is definitely different. It allows you to see something you probably wouldn’t see.”

He added that musicals and improv are usually separate entertainment forms, so it is interesting to watch how the cast incorporates both together in one show.

Emily Pyle, a member of Black Sheep Improv, said she has never participated in the musical improv event before, but she is excited to try something new and have fun with her friends.

“It is harder, but we’re practicing a lot this week, and you kind of get the hang of it,” Pyle, a sophomore studying communication, said.

Thacker said she is excited to see the new cast members perform in the musical and gain confidence in their improvisation skills.

“When we practiced last night, it was just so much fun seeing the new people just kind of get out of their shells a little bit more,” Thacker said. “It kind of forces them not to hang back, and they really have to put themselves out there.”
