Hockey: Former Bobcats to be honored during Alumni Weekend

Ohio will induct four new members into its hall of fame and recognize the 20th anniversary of the 1995-96 national championship team this weekend during a home series against Alabama.

While Ohio is playing a series against Alabama this weekend, Bird Arena will be filled with former Bobcats who will be recognized as part of Alumni Weekend.

“I think it’s really cool what Hogan’s doing with all the alumni from any year coming in,” defenseman Reilly Moore said.

The weekend features events such as a post-game chili dinner Friday and an alumni skate and pre-game social Saturday. The highlight will be during the first intermission of Saturday’s game when new members will be inducted to Ohio hockey's hall of fame.

The 1995-96 national championship team will also be honored for its 20th anniversary during Saturday’s first intermission.

The new hall of fame members include Dan Morris, Paul Marshall, Bill Roen and Leon Rozic.

Coach Sean Hogan said he appreciates the turnout of alumni who come to Athens for the weekend. He said the alumni and the history are what make Ohio hockey special.

“The program is always bigger than one individual team, or any individual coach at the time or player at the time,” Hogan said. “It’s been here a long time. It’ll be here long after we’re gone, and it’s really cool to see all that.”

Dan Morris: Player, coach

Morris is all over Ohio’s history books.

As a player, he is the all-time career leader in goals (123) and is second all-time in points (218). He was on three-straight national championship teams beginning in 1995 and was named national tournament MVP in 1996.

Morris also won a national title in 2004 as a head coach during his 11-year reign. He is the first member of the American Collegiate Hockey Association to be a national champion as both a player and a coach.

Paul Marshall: Goalie

As far as goalies go, Marshall might be the best Ohio has ever had.

Marshall holds eight team goaltending records including most career wins (72), lowest career goals against average (2.04) and highest career save percentage (.922).

His time at Ohio was highlighted by the 2009-10 season in which he won MVP for the Central States Collegiate Hockey League. He also led his team to a 34-10-3 record that season and a No. 3 national ranking.

Bill Roen: Defenseman, forward

In his four seasons as a Bobcat, Roen excelled on both sides of the ice.

As a defenseman, Roen earned first team All-American honors in the 1996-97 season. He was a first team All-American again in 1997-98, but as a forward.

Like Morris, Roen played on the three-straight national championship teams in the mid-90s. He finished his career with 46 goals and 145 points in 121 games.

Leon Rozic: Defenseman

When Rozic was on the ice, only one team was typically scoring goals — and it wasn’t the opposition.

Rozic’s career from 1992-96 included two national championships and was highlighted by a +71 plus/minus stat in his senior year.

He went out on top with a national championship and was named to the ACHA national tournament first team as a defenseman in 1996.

All statistics on the hall of fame inductees were used via a press release from Ohio hockey and can be found on ohiobobcatshockey.com.
