Jordan Klepper and John Hodgman coming to OU for Dads Weekend

‘Daily Show’ comedians Jordan Klepper and John Hodgman are coming to OU as part of the Performing Arts and Concert series.

Two correspondents from The Daily Show are making their way to Athens to bring some laughter to Dads Weekend.

Jordan Klepper and John Hodgman are coming to Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium as part of the Performing Arts and Concert Series. The show begins at 8 p.m. and the doors open at 7 p.m.

“It kind of falls under our typical pattern of trying to bring in a comedian for Dads Weekend. We’ve always looked at The Daily Show correspondents to package up for it, but it has never worked out until this Dads Weekend,” Andrew Holzaepfel, senior associate director of the Campus Involvement Center, said.

Holzaepfel added the show is expected to have PG-13 appropriate content.

Klepper made his debut on The Daily Show in March of 2014 as the New Senior Caucasian correspondent who reported on life in Crimea. Since then, Klepper has done everything from satirical bits on gun safety in Florida to reporting on pumpkin spice lattes.

Prior to the show, Klepper also spent time with the Second City National Touring Company.

Hodgman began contributing to The Daily Show in 2006 but is also known as the “PC” from the Apple Macbook commercials. As part of The Daily Show, he has played a meteorologist who has a degree in hurricanes as well as a “deranged billionaire.”

Erin McMahon, a sophomore studying journalism, said she is planning on attending the show with her dad. Because this is her dad’s second Dads Weekend. McHahon said they have already done a lot of the recurring events and wanted to do something new. And while McHanon said she doesn’t frequently watch The Daily Show, she is still looking forward to the night.

“My dad and I, we’re always joking with each other so for us to see a comedian is really fun,” she said.

McMahon said Dads Weekend is a great way to be able to show her dad what the campus is like, and being able to go to an event on campus is incredibly convenient.

Comedy shows are fitting for family weekends, Holzaepfel said, because it is accessible for the performers and tends to sell well. Last year’s Dads Weekend comedian was Billy Gardell, an actor best known for the show Mike & Molly.

Because of The Daily Show’s recent transition from Jon Stewart to host, Trevor Noah, Holzaepfel said it’s a good time to have The Daily Show correspondents at OU. He added quite a few students have also requested to have specific The Daily Show comedians.

Holzaepfel said he expects some people from surrounding areas to attend the show rather than just dads and students because of Hodgman’s “cult following” from his commercials as a PC.

“It should be a fun night of comedy and I’m interested in seeing Mr. PC in person,” he said.
