A Student Services employee helps students turn in their green slips during a power outage at Ohio University on Nov. 16.

Power restored to many of the 31 Ohio University buildings that were without it

OU sent out an alert at about 9:30 Monday morning about a power outage.

UPDATE: 5:53 p.m.

Though power has been restored to the majority of Ohio University’s campus, three residence halls still have no electricity due to repair work.

The university arranged for emergency generators to be attached Bush, Biddle and Perkins halls, according to an an update from the Ohio Alert website.

The update said the residents of the halls have been advised of locations on campus open until midnight to “provide them with a warm, comfortable space during this time.”

Locations include Baker Center, Alden Library, Ping Recreation Center and the Living Learning Center.

Emergency lighting in the hallways and stairwells are still working, as well as the fire panels and fire systems, according to the update. Students can still use card access to the buildings, and domestic hot water is not affected by the outage.

Gamertsfelder Hall is also experiencing power issues unrelated to the switchgear that affected Bush, Biddle and Perkins halls.

Crews are troubleshooting that issue and expect power to be restored soon, the update said.

Restoring power to Ohio University still poses some problems five hours after the initial outage.

In order to restore power to the entire campus, the power to the entire East Green will be turned off, according to an update from the Ohio Alert website.

OU Facilities does not know when the outage will occur, according to the website.

UPDATE: 11:20 a.m.

As of approximately 9:15 a.m. Monday, many Ohio University buildings are without power.

According to a campus alert sent out at 10:45 a.m., the outage mainly affects buildings on East Green, College Green and parts of West Green. The university expects power to be restored to all buildings by 12 p.m., except for Biddle, Bush and Perkins halls.

“Crews are working to isolate the problem area and restore power to the majority of affected buildings on the Athens Campus,” the alert reads.

The outage affects at least 31 buildings on campus, including Baker Center, Alden Library, Bentley Hall, Morton Hall, Copeland Hall, the Life Science Center and others. The time power is expected to return to Biddle, Bush and Perkins halls “is still being determined,” according to the alert.

OU spokesman Dan Pittman wasn't sure how many buildings were affected and said university officials are currently trying to assess the problem.

According to a tweet from the OU Office of Information Technology, the campus WiFi network is currently operating on generators. Internet and Voice Over Internet Protocol in specific buildings will last “as long as the battery backups hold.”
