Title IX, one of the six a cappella groups on campus, practices before the Winter Classic Concert.

Winter classic to combine a cappella with holiday cheer

The Tempo Tantrums are hosting a winter classic featuring all six a cappella groups on campus.

A little holiday cheer is coming to Athens in the form of a cappella Tuesday night.

The Tempo Tantrums, an all-female a cappella group unassociated with the School of Music is hosting its second annual TTAWC: Tempo Tantrums A Cappella Winter Classic. This includes performances from all six a cappella groups at Ohio University. All proceeds of the event go the Athens County Food Pantry.

“Holiday concerts can get boring sometimes,” Jourdan Matos, a senior studying communication and public advocacy, and member of the Tempo Tantrums, said.  “A cappella is always different and the groups traditionally sing pop songs and our admission is either a dollar or a canned food item — that’s something that students can get at the market. I feel like it’s accessible and fun.”

The event will take place Tuesday in Walter Rotunda at 7:30 p.m. and should last about 90 minutes. Each of the groups will sing two or three songs and a few featured members from the Tempo Tantrums will be singing duets, Matos said.

The groups are able to sing regular pop hits or holiday-themed songs as long as it’s appropriate, Taylor Bowling, a member of Tempo Tantrums said.

Last year, the event took place at Galbreath Memorial Chapel on College Green, but because the venue can only hold 80 people, Bowling, a junior studying early childhood education, said some attendees were turned away at the door.

The event raised nearly $300 in donations and canned food items, Bowling said, but this year, the group hopes to raise even more because Walter Rotunda can hold nearly 200 people.

The name of the event is meant to emphasize the purpose of bringing all the a cappella groups together, Bowling said. She said the event is a nice way to bring the semester to a close with all the a cappella groups together in one place.

“The Fall Semester … is busy in the music communities,” Bowling said. “A lot of members in a cappella groups are also involved in the Marching 110 and other parts of the music school so we haven’t had as much of an opportunity this semester, but we still do a lot of joint, impromptu events.”

Matt Fujita, a senior studying language arts education and member of the Leading Tones, said last year some groups even dressed up honor of the holidays For example, Section Eight, an all-male a cappella group auditioned out of the Singing Men of Ohio, wore it’s green blazers with red turtlenecks underneath.

Leading Tones is planning on singing it’s usual repertoire, but Fujita said there will be one holiday selection. The group is also plans to dress up in honor of the holidays, but the attire is going to be a surprise, he added.

“We don’t do a lot of gigs where all the groups are together like this so it’s pretty special to have one,” Fujita said. “Usually we do solo performance or only two groups at a time so it’s pretty special to have us all in once place.”
