Country singer Cole Swindell set to come to Athens to play at MemAud in March

The latest act to be added to the Performing Arts and Concert Series is Cole Swindell.

Ohio University students will have the chance to kick back and be “chillin’ it” with country singer Cole Swindell next semester.

Swindell is making his way to Athens on March 18 to play at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium as part of the Performing Arts and Concert Series.

Tickets will go on sale to the public Dec. 17 at noon.

“Cole is already a big name in country and is on his way to being a huge name. You can’t turn on country radio without hearing one of his hits,” Andrew Holzaepfel, the senior associate director of the Campus Involvement Center, said in an email.

Holzaepfel added that he was glad a date was available for Swindell to play in Athens because he thinks Swindell will soon be "too big” for MemAud.

“Mem Aud will be a party on March 18th,” Holzaepfel said in an email.

Swindell had his first country music hit in 2013 with his song “Chillin’ It,” which is part of his debut self-titled album from 2014. The album also includes current single “Let Me See Ya Girl” as well as “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey” and “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight.”

Aside from his debut album, Swindell has released two extended plays. Swindell is hoping to release his next album within the first few months of 2016, according to CBS' Philadelphia affiliate.

Swindell is currently headlining a tour throughout part of the United States, according to his website, along with his opening act, Adam Sanders, a singer who took part in writing Swindell’s “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey.”

During the summer, Swindell was an opening act on Jason Aldean’s Burn It Down tour, and during the summer of 2014, Swindell was an opening act on Luke Bryan’s That’s My Kind of Night tour.

Country star Tyler Farr performed in Athens as part of the Performing Arts and Concert Series in November. Holzaepfel said the shows could be similar.

“I think while there will be some similarities, Cole performs a different style of country music,” Holzaepfel said in an email.
