Students host “Feels Like the First Time” exhibit in the Trisolini Gallery

First year graduate students are having their first exhibition in Trisolini Gallery on Tuesday.

For the first time this year, a new division of 20 first-year graduate students in the School of Art and Design are coming together to display their works as a group.

A graduate art student exhibition titled, “Feels Like the First Time” opens Tuesday in Trisolini Gallery in Baker University Center at 5 p.m. and will run until Feb. 20.

“The masters of fine arts graduates have a first year show,”  Courtney Kessel, gallery coordinator for the Ohio University art galleries, said. “It’s all the different (art and design) majors represented here at Ohio University.”

The premiere of the gallery opening is free, and will have food and refreshments for those who attend, Cassidy Brauner, a first year photography graduate student, said.

“Individually, our work will deal with different topics,” Brauner said. “Some will be more visual and some will be more conceptual.”

Becky Chmielewski, a first year painting and drawing graduate student, has created a performance piece of a video installation that is a tribute to those affected by the AIDS epidemic, and interactions with the epidemic in the 1980s.

“It’s going to be diverse in terms of medium,” Kessel said.

Both Kessel and Brauner said the graduate students are not limited to the focus of what they are studying, and are encouraged to be interdisciplinary. They have free reign over what they create.

With supportive and challenging faculty and peers, the graduate students have experienced freedom to express themselves in new ways, Brauner and Chmielewski said.

They added that there is a close camaraderie between graduate students and they’re excited to celebrate this achievement together.
