City council to vote on new salt truck, host Athens Transit presentation

Athens City Council will vote on a new salt truck for the city and host an Athens Transit presentation at Monday night’s meeting.

Athens City Council will be voting on the potential purchase of a new salt truck for the city at its meeting Monday night.

This ordinance comes after one of the city’s most “beloved” salt trucks has run its course, Athens Mayor Steve Patterson said.

At council's Jan. 25 meeting, councilwoman Michele Papai, D-3rd Ward, estimated the cost of a new salt truck to be between $80,000 and $100,000.

Council will also be voting on an amended ordinance, introduced by councilman Kent Butler, D-1st Ward, regarding storm water repair on North Court Street.

The transportation committee, headed by Papai, will also host a presentation on Athens Public Transit at the meeting.

A number of ordinances will also be up or first reading at Monday night’s meeting, including an amended ordinance regarding the city pool. The ordinance will authorize $500,000 for engineering services for rebuilding or constructing a new pool in Athens, according to a previous Post report.

Council members unanimously moved to amend the previous ordinance from saying “outdoor municipal swimming pool” to “swimming pool options” at last week’s city council meeting.

An ordinance introduced by councilwoman Chris Fahl, D-4th ward, regarding the possibility of Mayor Patterson entering into a master energy purchase agreement with AEP Energy, will also be up for first reading.

City council will also move to reappoint members to the Arts, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board at Monday night’s meeting.
