MAC Notebook: MAC West still up in the air with season almost over

The MAC West is still undetermined.

With Mid-American Conference play almost finished, the team that will win the West Division is still a mystery.

Two weeks remain in regular season play, and four teams are actively competing for the top spot.

Ball State

Ball State leads the West with an 8-5 record. The Cardinals own the best defense in the league, holding opponents to 67 points per game.

The Cardinals are currently on a two-game win streak and will play Northern Illinois Friday.

Northern Illinois

Speaking of Northern, the Huskies hold the second seed within the MAC West.

Northern, which split its season series with Ohio, holds a 7-6 record in conference play.

The Huskies also hold the second-best defense in the MAC, holding opponents to just 69 points per game, with Friday's matchup slated as a potential "defensive" matchup.

Toledo

The Toledo Rockets are tied with Northern, also maintaining a 7-6 record. Toledo will travel to Eastern Michigan on Saturday, with the Rockets boasting the best scorer in the MAC.

Nathan Boone, who averages 19 points and close to nine rebounds per game, will look to dominate an Eagles team coming off a double-digit loss to Ohio on Tuesday night.

The Eagles have lost seven of their previous 10 games.

Central Michigan

Finally, Central Michigan is the third team to have a 7-6 record, along with Northern and Toledo in the West.

Central owns a plus-four scoring margin this season, averaging 76 points per game and surrendering 72 points per game.

The Chippewas have an in-state rivalry Saturday, taking on the Western Michigan Broncos.

The Broncos round out the bottom of the West, along with Eastern, sporting a 4-9 record inside the conference. Eastern is just a notch above with a 5-8 record inside the MAC.

The Chippewas halted a recent three-game slide, defeating Boothe and the Rockets on Tuesday.

The Chippewas, along with most of the MAC West teams, still have an opportunity to move up the standings, with about five-six games left in conference play.

Looking East

As of Wednesday, Akron holds the No. 1 seed in the MAC with a 10-3 conference record.

Akron will look to maintain hold of the conference with a highly contested matchup Friday with rival Kent State.

The final score of that matchup could have major repercussions moving forward in terms of seeding. With a Kent State loss and an Ohio win over Miami on Saturday, the Bobcats could take control of the No. 2 seed in the MAC.
