Lin's parents were both professors at Ohio University.
Good morning. Here’s what you need to know for Feb. 4, 2016:
“I will always recognize the smell of an English department and love it,” architect and artist Maya Lin said two nights ago on PBS’ Finding Your Roots.
Lin, the brains behind the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., was referring to the offices at Ohio University’s Ellis Hall. She grew up 50 years ago in Athens, where her mother and father taught at OU.
In the PBS show she went on to say that the OU art department was her home away from home and that growing up on the campus gave her the opportunity to think freely. She also discussed discrimination she faced upon designing the D.C. memorial, now widely regarded as one of the most significant pieces of public art in American history.
Lin also notably designed the artwork in OU’s Bicentennial Park.
