The Water Witches will play a show at the Smiling Skull Saloon featuring Wished Bone, Julia Martin and JJ Reed.

The Skull invites the broken-hearted to find 'beauty in loss'

This Sunday at 8 p.m. The Smiling Skull Saloon will be hosting the Broken Hearts Club Band.

Valentine's Day is about being in love, but for those who are not feeling the love, there is still a chance to celebrate.

The Smiling Skull Saloon will host ”The Broken Hearts Club Band” event for those not in the Valentine’s Day spirit Sunday at 8 p.m.

Water Witches will be the house band for the night with special guests Wished Bone, Julia Martin and JJ Reed. The Right Reverend Nicholas Littlehouse, a poet, will be the night’s emcee.

“They’re three singers who are solo, and we’ll be their backing band,” Charlie Touvell, the drummer of Water Witches, said.

The name of the concert is playing off of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” from The Beatles, Touvell said. All of the musicians will be playing sad songs that play on the theme of loss and heartbreak.

All four musicians will be playing their own music, as well as some covers.

“JJ Reed writes some of the saddest songs, and Julia and Wished Bone have amazingly gorgeous voices, and haunting songs,” Touvell said of the other musicians.

“Valentine's Day is about people who are in love, but there are people who are experiencing heartbreak and loss. We wanted to do a show based on that kind of music, and do something a little different,” Touvell said.

Ashley “Wished Bone” Rhodus, a folk singer and songwriter, will be playing all of the sad songs from her album, Psuedio Recordings, on Sunday. “It’s a nice switch up from normal celebrations,” Wished Bone said. “We’re lonely and celebrating the sadness and heartbreak.”

Wished Bone will be playing at The Skull on Friday as well.

Littlehouse will share spoken word poetry and stories of heartbreak in between sets.

“Our heaviest influences are glam rock, like David Bowie, and Beck for sad songs,” Touvell said. Water Witches’ music is hard to categorize but is best described as “freak folk” or psychedelic hard rock. The group’s debut album, Feathers, is available for streaming on Spotify.

“There’s beauty in loss and suffering,” Touvell said. “This pain can be transformed into a creative outlet that shows the enduring spirit of humanity.”
