Athens Major Crimes Unit busts two indoor marijuana operations in one week

Both operations were found to have several hundred dollars, handguns and equipment on the premises.

Athens law enforcement found and disassembled two separate indoor marijuana-growing operations last week.

The Athens Major Crimes Unit and the Athens Police Department located an operation March 18 that had a total of 105 marijuana plants in various stages of growth.

While working on an unrelated investigation, an APD officer detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the residence at 22 Joneswood, according to a news release from the crimes unit. The operation was found based on previous information about marijuana cultivation taking place at the location. The unit was later able to develop a search warrant for the home.

The crimes unit found and collected evidence, including one to two pounds of dried marijuana, several thousand dollars of equipment used in the operation, $780 in cash and a handgun.

On March 21 the crimes unit located and disassembled another indoor marijuana-growing operation at a property in Amesville. The Athens County Sheriff’s Office located the property in an unrelated investigation for an abandoned vehicle.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested the resident, Mathew Glass, also known as “Real Detective,” for tampering with evidence after interviewing him, according to the release. Glass attempted to destroy a bag of white powder, suspected to be ecstasy.

In the residence, the crimes unit found and collected 61 marijuana plants, "sophisticated growing equipment," several stashes of dried marijuana weighing between two and three pounds, $2,854 in cash and two guns, according to the release.

Evidence of graffiti activity by Glass was documented at the scene, and the unit notified local law enforcement about the graffiti.

Investigations of both cases are ongoing and will be presented to the Athens County Prosecutor's Office for review upon completion.
