Graduate Student Senate to appoint new leaders

Three positions, including two vice president chairs, will be filled at Monday’s meeting.

On Monday evening, the Ohio University Graduate Student Senate will appoint three students to new leadership positions and seek the passage of three amendments to the GSS Constitution.

Upon recommendation from the GSS executive council, Mitchell Smith, a graduate student studying history, is set to become the GSS Board of Elections chair, accepting once again the position that he held during the 2014-2015 academic year.

As the current academic year nears its end, current GSS President Eddie Smith and Vice President of Communications Sarah Kaplan will both be vacating their positions. They previously expressed a desire for students to become their successors.

“Whoever inherits this, whoever takes it on, can take it in a new direction now that there’s an institution in place here,” Smith said at the February GSS meeting. “We need people to step up and be leaders.”

At Monday’s meeting, GSS will examine a resolution to appoint Angela Chapman, a representative of the department of geography, as Kaplan’s replacement.

With the impending departure of Smith and Kaplan, GSS Vice President of Finance and Administration Liudmilla Pestun will be the only remaining member of this year’s executive council to retain her position in the coming year.

As of now, no replacement has been announced for Smith, who recently ended his local campaign for representative of District 94 for the Ohio House.

GSS will also appoint its Vice President of Legislative Affairs, which is a position that has sat vacant for the duration of the academic year. After a vote by the general assembly, Ken Ward, a representative of the journalism department, has been selected and is slated to be appointed at the meeting.

Members will also examine three resolutions to amend the wording and placement of certain sections of the current GSS constitution.
