Post Haste: Drink Up, Bobcats. Athens was named one of America’s best beer towns; Sook Center meets first fundraising goal

Mystic Mama was named the best beer in town.

Good morning. Here's what you need to know for Monday, March 7, 2016:

With more than a dozen bars lining a quarter-mile stretch of road Uptown, there’s no question that Athens residents do their fair share of drinking — especially when it comes to beer.

Yes, Athens apparently loves its beer. So much in fact, that website The Fiscal Times recently included the city in its ranking of America’s 25 Best Beer Towns. Athens ranked 16th on the list, which included notable cities such as Minneapolis, Minnesota, Portland, Oregon, and Boulder, Colorado.

The criteria for selection was unknown, but we’re guessing the large population of beer-guzzling college students and prominent local breweries like Devil’s Kettle, Little Fish and Jackie O’s helped out Athens’ standing.

The Fiscal Times also declared Mystic Mama, an India pale ale from Jackie O’s Pub and Brewery, the best beer in town.
