The Athena Cinema to screen ‘The Princess Bride’ for students and moms

The Athena Cinema will show The Princess Bride on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.

“Prepare to die” laughing at The Athena Cinema this weekend for Moms Weekend.

The Athena Cinema, 20 S. Court St., will be showing The Princess Bride at 7 p.m., Friday and 3 p.m., Saturday. Tickets cost $6.50.

The Princess Bride — released in 1987 — is a romance, comedy and action film. The film is told from the perspective of a grandfather reading the fairy tale to his young grandson. The Princess Bride tells the story of Buttercup, a farm girl sent to be the bride of the prince. When she is kidnapped, many people come to her rescue.

Alexandra Kamody, the director of the Athena, said the theater tries to pick older films that speak to a lot of different people for parents’ weekends. Choosing The Princess Bride “just felt right,” she said.

“It just seemed like a movie that so many people have a nostalgic feeling for and a soft spot,” Kamody said.

She said they have been wanting to screen the film for a while. Kamody said she felt it was a film that both students and moms would like to see.

“It seems to have this multi-generational (quality),” she said.

Kamody said the theater is usually more relaxed with those screenings because most people have already seen the film. She encourages audience members to watch the movie the way they want to — people can dress up as a character from the film, quote the movie while it is playing or sing along to the music.

“We’re always just looking for something that will bring people in, get people together and have a good time,” Kamody said.

Meredith Bates, a freshman studying psychology, said her mom is driving from Columbus to spend Moms Weekend with her. Bates said she has never seen The Princess Bride, but she will still go see it this weekend.

“(I would go) to spend time with my mom, and she would probably like the movie,” she said.

Kendra Fick, a sophomore studying biological sciences, said her mom is also coming to Athens this weekend. Fick said she has a deep, personal connection to the film.

“It was the first VHS I ever owned, and it has a deep meaning because my grandfather gave it to me,” she said. “(My mom and I) heard it was playing at the theater and said we had to go see it.”
