Members of Girl Scout Troop 1406 sell Girl Scout cookies outside of Baker Center on March 7th, 2016.

Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Samoas, Oh my! Girl Scout cookies for sale at the top of Baker

A local Girl Scout troop will be selling cookies at the top of the Baker Center this week.

Springtime in Athens means a few things: nicer weather, fest season and, of course, Girl Scout cookies.

Members of Athens Girl Scout Troop 1406, ages 9-13, will be selling cookies this week at the top of Baker University Center for $4 per box.

Sarah Poggione, a political science associate professor at Ohio University and the mother of one of the troop members, said the fundraiser has been a success.

“Sales have been really good,” Poggione said. “The girls have been here since 3, and we’ve sold a lot of boxes so far.”

The girl scouts will be selling their cookies in the same location from 3:30-6 on Tuesday, and from 4-6 on Thursday.

The money raised from the cookie sales goes to various projects that the troop is involved with.

“We get a certain percentage, it goes to our service unit, primarily for events and such,” Poggione said. “The money that goes to the troop goes to camps and stuff.  Last year we were able to pay for an overnight trip to COSI.”

The money is also used for troop sponsored service projects.

“We made birthday cake boxes for one of the food shelters as one of our recent projects,” Poggione said.

Poggione’s daughter, Sophie, a member of the troop, said she enjoyed the experience.

“(My favorite part is) probably giving the customers cookies because it makes them happy,” Sophie said.

As for her favorite cookie, Sophie is partial to the classic Thin Mint.

“I like anything with mint,” she said.

Hannah McVay, an OU freshman studying biology pre-med, said she is also a fan of Thin Mints, as she tore into her newly purchased box.

“I like Thin Mints because they’re refreshing and seasonal,” she said. “You see Oreos and you’re like, 'Oh, Oreos.'  You see Thin Mints and you’re like, 'Hell yeah, Girl Scout cookies are back!' ”
