John Zinno navigates off-campus housing during a delivery.

Delivery options abound for the hungry OU freshman

From Asian cuisine to “cookiewiches” and just about everything in between, local eateries offer late-night delivery on and off campus.

For the freshmen spending their first year on campus, the dining halls may seem like a magical place, full of all-you-can eat fettuccine Alfredo, bottomless french fries and enough breadsticks to rival Olive Garden.

Be warned, though: The meal-plan options may seem exciting at first, but alternating between salad, tacos and grilled cheese can get really old, really fast.

Though Court Street offers its own wide array of alternatives, there are going to be nights when the absolute last thing you want to do is hike up Jeff Hill to Court Street in the middle of a thunderstorm, or take a break from studying to make the trek to uptown eateries.

But never fear. The following Athens restaurants offer delivery options to quell every late night hunger:

If you’re craving a midnight snack:

Insomnia Cookies is the way to go, with a menu that includes 12 classic cookie recipes, in addition to ice cream, the hybrid “cookiewiches” and milk to wash it all down. The 27 N. Court St. location is open from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. and delivers to nearby homes, dorms, apartments and businesses until closing time.

If you’re in the mood for a late night slice:

Shively pizza just not cutting it anymore? Don’t sweat it — you’ve got four unique options to choose from.

Avalanche Pizza offers a unique array of flavors (“Crouching Kimchi, Hidden Chicken,” anyone?), including vegan and gluten-free options, in addition to calzones, sandwiches and breadsticks. Placing a special emphasis on using local ingredients and environmentally-friendly methods, Avalanche is open until 1 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday, 3 a.m. Thursday and 4 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

More than just a popular weekend bar, Courtside Pizza, located near the top of Court Street, offers a variety of pizzas, subs, salads and breadsticks. Courtside offers both traditional flavors and specialties such as the “Son of a Beach” and “Magic Ranch Pie.” It delivers until midnight Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, and until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.

With “pizza as unique as you,” as per the company’s motto, Plus 1 Pizza offers pies such as “The Tot-za” (a ranch pizza topped with seasoned tater tots), in addition to fully customizable options. Plus 1 is open until midnight during Sunday and the weekdays and stays open an extra hour Friday and Saturday nights.

If you’re searching for a more familiar flavor, Domino’s Pizza, located near the intersection of Court and Mill streets, delivers until 1:15 a.m. during the week and 3:15 a.m. Friday and weekends.

Feeling carnivorous? Here are some wings for that:

With nearly 30 locations popping up near college campuses around the country, the Wings Over franchise has its very own store right smack in the middle of Court Street, delivering wings, ribs, sandwiches and sides until the early hours of the morning. Wings Over Athens is open until 1 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday, 2:30 a.m. Thursday and 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Looking for some international flavor? Here are some options:

A participant in the “30 miles meal movement,” Fusion Noodle Company uses locally-grown ingredients in its recipes, cooking up “modern interpretations of classic dishes,” including noodles, soups and appetizers, such as spring rolls and potstickers. Though orders have to be at least $10 to qualify for delivery, Fusion delivers from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday from its location on West Union Street.

From the inside, Ginger Asian Kitchen presents itself as a sort of Chipotle for Asian cuisine, with its popular build-your-own bowls, combining rice, meats, vegetables, sauces and other toppings for a portable meal that’s perfect for on-the-go students. Though Ginger offers delivery until 10 p.m., orders must total at least $15 to qualify.

Looking for a healthier option?:

Pita Pit, also located on Court Street, offers a variety of healthy options for the busy student, including build-your-own pitas, as well veggie, meat and breakfast options. Orders can be placed until 12 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday and until 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. Orders can be placed through Pita Pit’s app, available through the App Store.

Hungry for an Athens classic?:

A local favorite with uniquely Athens charm, Bagel Street Deli specializes in deli-style “bagelwich” sandwiches, made to order with local ingredients and in dozens of flavorful varieties. With options for carnivores, vegetarians and vegans alike, Bagel Street Deli delivers from 4-9 p.m. Sunday through Friday, taking orders up to 15 minutes before closing time.

It operates until 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday and until 11 p.m. Sunday.
