Hockey: Crew joins Ohio staff as graduate assistant

The Bobcats add J.J. Crew, a former NCAA hockey player, to the coaching staff

Ohio added a new member to its coaching staff Thursday, one that is familiar to coach Sean Hogan.

The Bobcats hired J.J. Crew as a graduate assistant this week to add to the coaching staff. Crew played four years of college hockey at NCAA Division I Western Michigan, including the 2010-11 season when Hogan was with the Broncos as an assistant coach and video coordinator.

“Reuniting with a former coach of mine is an exciting opportunity,” Crew said in an Ohio Hockey press release. “I’ve learned a lot from Sean as a player and I’m looking forward to learning more from him as a coach.”

Hogan identified Crew as a shutdown center with a strong work ethic in his time at Western Michigan. Hogan also expects that Crew will bring “knowledge and passion to Ohio Hockey.”

Crew said his experiences playing as a defensive-minded forward will help strengthen Ohio’s defense in terms of discipline, competitiveness and urgency.

The Bobcats finished No. 9 in the American Collegiate Hockey Association with 89 goals allowed and their goals against per game, 2.17, was one of the lowest in the country.

Prior to Western Michigan, Crew played in the United States Hockey League, which is known as the top junior hockey league in the country. His most recent position prior to joining Ohio was coach of the Colorado Rampage in the Rocky Mountain Junior League.

Crew was also an assistant coach on the Rampage’s U18 team and served as coordinator for the team’s peewee hockey program.

As a child, Crew was born and raised in Placentia, California. He started playing hockey as a 9-year-old and moved to Colorado when he was 16.

While coaching the Bobcats, Crew will also help run the Bird Arena Adult Hockey League.
