Girl reports kidnapping attempt near West Elementary to Athens Police Department

Update: This article has been updated to include information that the kidnapping report was fabricated.

A girl reported to Athens Police Department that an unknown man attempted to abduct her on her way home from school Thursday.

The incident allegedly occurred at the rear of West Elementary School near the steps that lead to West State Street, according to an APD report.

The report describes the suspect as about 5 feet 8 inches, skinny with red hair with black highlights and a thick black beard.

The man was reported to have fled toward Central Ave., where he got into a brown and red Corvette, according to the report.

After an investigation, officers were "unable to substantiate" any of the information reported to them, according to the report.

APD later reported the kidnapping attempt was fabricated. The case is closed.
