Police determine reported kidnapping attempt was fabricated

A kidnapping attempt reported to the Athens Police Department on Aug. 25 was fabricated, according to information from the department.

"The female never had any involvement with an unknown suspicious male on her way home from school and explained that she made the story up to get noticed," the updated APD report states.

In the initial report, a juvenile girl told police an unknown man attempted to kidnap her on her way home from school. She alleged that the incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. at the rear of West Elementary School near the stairs that lead to West State Street.

The initial report described a suspect who was about 5 feet 8 inches, tall and skinny, with red hair, black highlights and a thick black beard. The man then supposedly fled toward Central Avenue and got into a red and brown Corvette, according to the initial report.

APD officers had found no evidence to back up the girl's information at the time the initial report was released on Aug. 25.

The case is now closed, according to the updated report.
