Bob Bradley

Ohio alumnus named first American manager in English Premier League

Bob Bradley, an Ohio University alumnus, was unveiled Monday as the new manager of Swansea City Football Club.

Bradley is the first American manager to coach a team in the English Premier League.

After graduating from Princeton University, Bradley took a year off before enrolling in Ohio’s Sport Administration program. And after Ohio’s current coach of the time left, he was announced as the 1981 men’s soccer coach.

He was just 22.

“I was there for one season and it was a good experience for me,” Bradley told soccer magazine Eight by Eight in 2015.

“I had guys on the team that were older than I was. OU has a good international population, so we drew some international students. …At a young age your sort of test yourself.”

Bradley’s lone season was the last season of Ohio’s men’s program.

Since then he rose through American soccer ranks, from college teams to Major League Soccer and eventually the U.S. men’s national team coach at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Swansea will play at Arsenal on Oct. 15 for Bradley’s debut match.
