Two Ohio University students start a new fortune telling business

Cierra Boyd fans the tarot cards out in front of her client’s face, and the image of the royal blue starry sky stares back at the client, willing that person to ask a question about life and to see what the future holds.

Sarah Felder, a senior studying human sexuality, and Boyd, a senior studying retail merchandising and fashion production development, met through a mutual friend and talked about meeting up to do tarot readings for each other.

“There is not a lot of people on campus that do it so I just texted her and said ‘hey why don’t we just start a business?’ ” Felder said.

The business’s name, Third Eye Fortunes, has a psychic meaning behind it, too.

“ 'Third eye’ has to do with just being awakened and aware to your psychic abilities and intuition,” Boyd said.

Although the business focuses on tarot readings, other services, including palm readings, are offered.

Felder studied astrology, but when she does tarot readings she uses her pendulum to contact her spirit guides and other people’s spirit guides. Boyd specializes in tarot palm reading and can also figure out people’s past lives as well.

When they go about reading someone, they each have a different process.

“I ask them what they want to know specifically. Do they want to know about their past life, do they want to know about their past, present, future … then I go from there,” Boyd said.

Felder has a different approach.

“With tarot, I ask them ‘do you have a question for me?’ ” Felder said. “If they just want a general reading, I’ll still have them think of a question so that I know I am on the right track, then I have them shuffle all of the cards around and so that they are putting all of their energy into the cards. Then I make them choose a card when I lay them out and then using their energy in their left palm, because that is the palm of intuition. They choose 10 cards and then I place them in a Celtic cross spread.”

Third Eye Fortunes charges about $20 to perform a reading.

“It’s $20 for a full reading, which usually takes about a half hour and it is definitely worth it,” Felder said. “It is really cheap compared to most professionals. Small readings are about $5 too.”

Boyd can do palm readings for $15, but her prices are $20 for full readings, too.

Brooke Hyland, an undecided freshman, said she would be willing to have her fortune told.

“I have never done it before,” Hyland said. “It might be interesting since I’m in Athens and it is a different city.”

The two plan to expand their business by doing small readings on Court Street: three cards for $2. They are also open to meeting with clients at other places that they would feel comfortable with but don’t have a set meeting place for the business yet.

When it comes to knowing when they were aware of their special abilities, both feel differently about how long they think they have had them.

“I feel like, personally, for me, my whole life I have felt this way. I never knew for sure until last year when I went on a community service trip to New Orleans,” Boyd said. “I talked to a psychic and the first card that I pulled was called the High Priestess, which is a card of high intuition, clairvoyance and the ability to see behind the veil of evolution in your dreams, so I started utilizing this.”

Felder, on the other hand, would not necessarily say she is a psychic in everyday life.

“I think that everyone has the ability to be intuitive. I do things that I am attracted to in order to exercise the ability of my intuitions,” she said. “The more I do tarot, the more I learn about astrology. The more I meditate and practice spirituality, the more I feel ‘psychic’ because I am just exercising that intuition that we all have inside of us.”

Felder said people have experienced a lot of emotions when participating in tarot readings.

“I just found that when I would tell people about their astrology sign, it would sometimes make people cry because it was so spot on, and I would say totally different things to everyone I talked to even if they had the same sign or I just used my intuition on what they needed to hear,” she said.
