City Council: Sewer and waterline renovations on agenda for Monday

This article has been updated to include further information about the waterline replacement project

Athens City Council will make a decision during Monday night’s meeting on an ordinance slated to increase public dollars spent on the Depot Street Lift Station project.

The city funds will supplement a $300,000 critical infrastructure grant the state awarded in 2014 for use on the project. The project will cost a total of $1.14 million dollars. So far, the city has spent $700,680 from its sewer fund and additional money from grants.

The project includes a series of renovations such as replacing the roof and installing a mechanical screen and odor control equipment.

“It helps the city take care of its sewer,” Council President Chris Knisley said.”This request is for additional money allocated for odor control system.”

The city began taking bids for the project in December 2015 and awarded the project to the Geiger Brothers, a construction firm in Jackson.

Construction began over the summer.

Council will also be making plans to move forward with the waterline replacement project.

The project will replace the main water lines and water services by updating meters and installing a new fire hydrants on Grand Park Boulevard and Dalton Avenue. Grand Park Boulevard will receive an as asphalt overlay once the waterline installation is completed.

The bid went to York Paving, a paving and construction company based in Athens.

“We’ll be discussing the first portion, the design part of the project tomorrow,” Knisley said.

At this point, the city is requesting $60,000 dollars from the water maintenance fund for engineering.

Local funds are being used to pay for the project.
