Dads visit and get involved with campus-wide events

Ohio University Dads Weekend gave students the chance to visit with their dads and experience a range of events varying from eating donuts to cheering on Ohio sports teams.

On Friday night, dads and students alike gathered in The Convo to watch the Ohio volleyball team take on rival Miami.

For many students, that was an opportunity to visit with their fathers and cheer on the team.

Marissa Balish, an undecided freshman, was at the game with her father Mark Balish, who drove three and a half hours to visit his daughter. He added that the game was a good experience for the both of them.

“I’ve wanted to come to a (volleyball) game,” Mark said. “I’ve never seen a game.”

At halftime, there was an opportunity for crowd members to win prizes in a halftime bullseye contest.

Dads, students and other audience members were given a chance to win hats, sweatshirts and T-shirts by serving a volleyball over the net in hopes of hitting the various articles of clothing lying on the court.

At the end of the game, Miami came out on top, however this didn’t stop students from enjoying time with their dads.

The Front Room Coffeehouse also had an open-mic night on Friday in which anyone could get on stage and perform anything from original music to covers. The event was an opportunity for dads and their students to enjoy music or even do a duet if they wanted to.

Saturday morning started bright and early. Miniature golf started in Alden Library at 10 a.m., and Scripps College of Communication hosted "Dads and Donuts" in the Schoonover Center at 10:30 a.m.

Megan Vehar, a sophomore studying strategic communication, attended Scripps’ "Dads and Donuts" with her father, Kenny Vehar.

“I haven’t seen my dad in almost two months. He’s been in Italy,” Megan said, “I didn’t want to leave Athens.”

Kenny and his daughter came to Athens from Cleveland for Dads Weekend, and it was not his first time.

“We had fun last year so I am looking forward to (Dads Weekend) this year,” Kenny said.

If neither of these events sounded fun, there was a Zipline Adventure at The Ridges going on at the same time.

There was also a retro-themed basketball tournament going on in Ping Center for all dads and families at 11 a.m., and the women’s basketball team played Thomas More at 11:30 in The Convo. The men’s basketball team later played Rio Grande at 2 p.m. in The Convo, as well.

Saturday night, the Ohio volleyball team took on Bowling Green in The Convo, and BGSU won the first set, but Ohio quickly took the second set.

The third set presented some problems. Ohio was in the lead for the majority of the set but at the last minute Bowling Green caught up. The teams rallied against each other for some time before finally giving the set to the Falcons 36-34.

Overall, Ohio won over Bowling Green.

Sunday morning started with a "Flying Pancake Breakfast" at 10 a.m. Each person attending had to catch their “flying” pancake before he or she could continue through the breakfast line.

A few pancakes were dropped, but for the most part they were caught.

George Sarzosa, the father of Ashley Sarzosa, a sophomore studying nursing, also came down for the weekend.

“I wanted to be with my daughter. That’s enough.” George said, “Anyplace, anywhere, just to have some time together.”
