MAC Football: Season to end with Ohio and Western Michigan matchup

Another season has come and gone in the Mid-American Conference, and division winners have been crowned.

In the East, Ohio took the top spot with Miami taking the second position. Both teams finished 6-2 in the conference, but the Bobcats had the tiebreaker over the RedHawks.

The most impressive aspect of Miami’s conference record is it began 0-2 in the conference — 0-6 overall — and won six consecutive games (6-6) to finish 0.500.

To round out the East, there is Bowling Green and Akron — both 3-5 in conference — followed by Kent State and Buffalo, 2-6 and 1-7 in the conference, respectively.

No. 21 Western Michigan will represent the West in the MAC Football Championship Game, finishing the season undefeated.

Following the Broncos is Toledo, who was 6-2 in conference, and Western Michigan’s only threat to not reach the championship game.

After Toledo, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Ball State round out the division in that order.

Going bowling

Six MAC teams finished with at least six wins to reach bowl eligibility status. The list includes Ohio, Miami, Western Michigan, Toledo, Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan.

Becoming bowl eligible is not always guaranteed, Eastern Michigan coach Chris Creighton said multiple times this season. With the multitude of bowls, however, six wins is practically a guarantee.

The Post projected where some MAC teams will end up this upcoming bowl season.

Davis setting records

It has been said multiple times this season: Corey Davis has set a record.

All season it has seemed like the Western Michigan wide receiver has been setting records, whether they be Western Michigan records or conference records. Now, he holds a Football Bowl Subdivision record.

Going into the regular season finale, Davis needed 19 receiving yards to set the career record.

He caught eight passes for 81 yards to set the record.

Coach P.J. Fleck talked this season about Davis being a hard worker — and it’s easy to see that it has paid off.
