Wrestling: Bobcats a mixed-bag in first competition

Ohio coming up short was the storyline of its first competition this season at the Mountaineer Quad in Morgantown, West Virginia, on Sunday.

Squaring off against Pittsburgh to begin the day, the first few matches only foreshadowed the back-and-forth atmosphere Ohio would experience throughout the quad.

Winning just two of their first six matches against the Panthers, a Bobcat comeback looked eminent as Ohio won the next three with victories coming from junior Arsen Ashugyan (174), freshmen Hunter Yeargan (184) and Bailey Faust (197). Putting the Bobcats within reach of Pittsburgh, heavyweight redshirt sophomore Zach Parker fell just short of winning and ultimately the dual as Ohio fell 22-16.

That late loss carried into the start of the Bobcats next dual against Campbell as the Bobcats lost consecutive matches in the 125- and 133-pound weight classes. Redshirt junior Noah Forrider put Ohio on the scoreboard winning his match at 141 pounds by decision to a score of 6-3. The momentum shifted in favor of Ohio winning the next four of six including another win for Ashugyan and Faust.

With a score of 20-15 before the heavyweight match between Parker and Campbell’s Jere Heino, again Parker fell just short of securing a win, resulting in a 23-15 defeat.

With two close losses, Ohio came out of the gate in quite a scrappy style to start the third and final dual of the day against host West Virginia, where Bobcats beat the Mountaineers 25-11.

Ohio will look to build upon Sunday’s competition when it travels to Binghamton, New York to compete in the Bearcat Open.
