Friday morning vacant house fire is under investigation

A fire ignited inside a vacant house Friday morning, leading the Athens Fire Department to call the incident “suspicious,” according to a news release from the department.

The structure fire took place at about 4:30 a.m. on Cable Lane near the intersection of N. May Ave. and Woodside Dr., according to the release.

A heavy fire presence on the left side of the structure led to difficulties when putting the fire out, according to the release.

The utilities to the home were off, which had been empty for a couple years, according to the release.

The fire is under investigation.

Anyone who has information regarding the fire is encouraged to contact the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s office at 1-800-589-2728.
