Police arrested an Athens man for allegedly starting a fire Tuesday morning at the Athens Mall, 1002 E. State St.
At about 3 a.m., Athens Police Department officers responded to a report of a suspicious fire at the mall, according to an APD report. Ohio Highway Patrol officers stopped a vehicle exiting the parking lot of the business, and officers arrested Christopher Oiler, 22.
Oiler was charged with aggravated arson, breaking and entering, criminal damaging and safecracking.
An ATM machine was burned in the incident and a door was destroyed, according to the report, which values the damage at about $1,000. APD took a blowtorch as evidence.
Oiler is currently incarcerated at Southeast Ohio Regional Jail, according to the jail's website.
