Glouster man gets life in prison for rape charges

A Glouster man was sentenced to life in prison for rape Monday.

Judge George P. McCarthy sentenced Terry L. Smathers, age 50, after he had been found guilty of two counts of rape, according to a news release from Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn. 

As a consequence of his conviction, Smathers will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. He will be eligible to apply for parole after serving fifteen years of his sentence.

Smathers is currently incarcerated in Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

The Athens County Sheriff's Office investigated the case, according to the news release.
