Pro-Life Pondered: Abortion killing off the weak

Take a look at this child.

She’s a human being, just like you without any doubt. However, there is something distinct about her that might make her different from you — she has Down syndrome. Unfortunately, her disability reduces what she can do. This means that others around her have to support her since she can’t support herself. Does this make her less valuable? Does this mean that she deserves fewer rights than other human beings? I believe that any human being, no matter what his or her condition, should be treated equally with other human beings. The abortion lobby believes differently. They believe that mothers with children who have Down syndrome should be able to kill them at a certain age. For example, BBC released a documentary titled “A World Without Down's Syndrome?” which talks about the benefits of washing out children with Down syndrome in order to make the world a so-called better place.

As of April 2016, the Massachusetts General Hospital stated, “Among the findings of that study were that around 1 in 792 infants — 12.6 per 10,000 — born in 2010 nationwide had Down syndrome, reflecting about 5,300 babies born each year and that around 3,100 pregnancies were terminated after prenatal diagnosis.” This means we are killing half of the Down syndrome population in the United States per year.

This is a methodology called eugenics. Eugenics is a way to improve the quality of human beings by, in one sense, killing off those who aren’t as well-functioning as other human beings. We hear about these types of atrocities of human beings being killed because of their ability to function.

However, how does it make us feel when we realize that this is happening in our own country? Even Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, was in favor of eugenics. According to PBS, “Sanger spoke publicly of the need to put an end to breeding by the unfit. In 1920 Sanger publicly stated that ‘birth control is nothing more or less than the facilitation of the process of weeding out the unfit [and] of preventing the birth of defectives.’ ”

A few weeks ago, I posed the question asking how we should treat the unloved. This week, I want to put a question in your head. What kind of society kills the disabled in order to have a “better society?” How would we view another country if we were killing elders due to their lack of ability? Hopefully, we wouldn’t look too kindly on it. Right now, as a born individual, you are safer than a fetus in the womb. However, what if one day, the target was painted on your back and you were seen as a parasite to society? Let us, as a nation, abort eugenics instead. That way, whenever your life value is questioned, there will be a law in place affirming that you are a human being who deserves the inalienable right to life.
