Several early morning fires near Palmer Place under investigation

Multiple fires near Palmer Place Apartments caused $300,000 in damage early Thursday morning.

The Athens Fire Department responded to a fire in the building at 18 Kurtz St. at about 2 a.m. that morning, according to a news release. The rear of the building caught fire and the flames spread to the attic of the house.

The department discovered five more fires nearby: fires burned inside two dumpsters next to Palmer Place Apartments, in two places inside Palmer Place and on the rear deck of the building at 25 Kurtz St.

The fires were extinguished by about 5 a.m.

The Athens Police Department, the Fire Department and the Ohio Fire Marshal are investigating the fires.

The Ohio University Police Department, The Plains Volunteer Fire Department, the Richland Area Volunteer Fire Department and the Athens County EMS also responded to the incident, according to the news release.
