Police arrest two after yearlong drug trafficking investigation

A yearlong investigation ended in the arrest of two men on drug charges Tuesday.

Officers from the Athens County Major Crimes Unit arrested Jerrell E. Harrison, 38, of Columbus and Jeffery L. McKenzie, 53, of Athens at an Athens residence on Hope Drive. Officers also seized a set of digital scales, heroin, crack cocaine and about $1,900.

As the Athens County Sheriff’s Special Response Team secured the location, Harrison fled, according to a Major Crimes Unit press release. He was found hiding in trees near the residence, and allegedly tried to hide evidence there. Harrison and an officer sustained minor injuries during the incident, according to the release.

McKenzie was charged with felony possession of cocaine and two counts of complicity, according to the Athens County Municipal Court website. Harrison was charged with tampering with evidence, possession of cocaine, possession of heroin, possession of criminal tools and two counts of trafficking. Both men were arraigned in the Athens County Municipal Court on Wednesday morning.
