Athens Football: Quick strikes help Bulldogs beat Alexander 48-0

As Treyce Albin ran down the left sideline and saw the ball coming for him, all he needed to do was stick out his hands.

He caught the ball and ran the rest of the way to the end zone, as quarterback Clay Davis had just thrown a 43-yard touchdown pass to him on the second play of the game.

The touchdown got the Bulldogs out to an early lead, one they would not give up. Athens went on to beat Alexander 48-0 on Friday night at R. Basil Rutter Field.

The quick strike the Bulldogs had on the first drive would continue throughout the night. They had two other drives that ended in a quick strike score, one being two plays, and the other had the Bulldogs scoring on the first play of the drive.

“Anytime you got a short field it takes a lot of the pressure off the offense,” coach Ryan Adams said. “They feel a lot better that they can punch the ball in when they’re in that kind of yardage.”

Athens had good starting field position all night, and the Alexander offense couldn't get anything going. Athens had nine sacks on the night.

Albin also finished with three touchdowns on the night.

Two of the quick-strike scores came on deep passes to Albin; the other on a 38-yard screen pass to Evan Adams.

“It’s always huge to be able to stretch the field,” Adams said.

The Bulldogs (3-1) have been able to stretch the field in their three wins and have done much of the same thing they did Friday: score quickly.

As much as they have been able to score in their wins, they know they can be better.

“Not only was it league game, but it was also a cross-town rivalry,” Adams said. “There was still bitter feelings from the last time Alexander came to Athens. We weren’t on the winning end of things.”
