Baseball: Pitching and freshmen impress in low-scoring Wren Fest

The annual Wren Fest is always fun: giveaways and free food for fans, and teammates playing teammates.

Even the players got hot dogs after the game.

Every year, Ohio baseball splits into Green and Black and they go head-to-head in a seven inning scrimmage.

In this year's iteration, the Green team won 1-0 after a Treyben Funderburg single scored Jack Longo.

The Bobcats do have some fun playing against one another, but they only can do that so much until they feel a little stir crazy.

“I think we’re ready to play somebody else,” coach Rob Smith said.

In Wednesday’s game, the pitching prevailed, with only the one run scored and few hits between the two teams. Ohio in its run to the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championship was led by its pitching, and it seems as if that may continue into the new season.

“We threw a lot of strikes,” Smith said. “Strikes typically win.”

Ohio will lose a lot of key players from its conference championship team from a year before, but Smith was impressed with what he saw from some of his freshmen.

Funderburg, an infielder, drove in the lone run on the night. Shortstop Trevor Hafner and pitcher Chace Harris also had good showings in the scrimmage.

“It’s still probably a little early pinpointing certain guys,” Smith said. “But, I know we got a good group of young guys.”
