From the Editor's Desk: 'The Post' illustrates its first cover of the year

After going through an entire academic year with a weekly tabloid as a new norm, Post staffers had the chance to look back and see what we could do differently. Many people reached out about having photos displayed prominently on the cover, and this year, that is something we have been working on.

This week, we are switching it up. We have a talented design team that is eager to fill the paper with illustrations. The cover and a few other stories are feeling their love this week. Our main spread about women using alternative medicine is illustrated as is the cover.

A few other stories throughout the tabloid have illustrations, including a story about Counseling and Psychological Services’ increase in staff members, another about diversity in videos and one other story about the Athens Cannabis Ordinance.

Using illustrations gives us the chance to tell the story in a different way. The visual can tell a story of its own and supplement the writer’s words. It is a chance for reporters to delve into the world of design and learn a little more about what goes into it. It also gives our designers a chance to be a little extra creative with their page design.

And of course, we are not skipping over new photos either. Throughout the tabloid, readers will find a few dog photos — including Tumbles, the two-legged dog — and photos of horses at Ohio University Southern.

Typically, we haven’t had many in-depth stories focusing on a branch campus, but we ventured outside of Athens to Ohio University Southern. The campus has a program to certify instructors in therapeutic riding. It is a program that brings in people from a wide range of place. Again, we do not always have the chance to explore regional campuses as much as we like, but this story helped to bridge that gap.

Though it is about 80 miles away, publishing the story is opening our audience to other aspects of Ohio University they may have not known much about before.

As always, want want to give you the best reading experience possible.
