Fun News Friday: Officer saves 22 ducklings; adults can travel in Little Tikes style, too

The news this week has been full of hurricane coverage, earthquakes and health care debates. Odds are after that negativity, everyone needs a good dose of fun news. Here’s a look at what was happening this week in the good parts of the world:

Young insect expert

An 8-year-old girl used to be picked on for her love of bugs, but now she’s a co-author on a scientific paper. Sophia Spencer is an insect expert, and has a byline to show it. Her mom reached out to some scientists for support.

Scientists are really showing their support.

Little Tikes for adults

When it came to cruzing around as a child, most people probably did so in a car that looked like this:

Well, good news! You can now do so as an adult as well.

“Mechanic John Bitmead and his brother Geoff of Attitude Autos created just that back in 2015, with an oversized spin on the classic kid wheels,” Mental Floss reported. “It's road-legal and fully functional, looking somewhat similar to a Smart Car (but way cooler).”

Beaver Dam duck rescue

Beaver Dam Police officers rescued 73 ducklings. Officer Andy Strachota was awarded a trophy for saving 22 ducklings. The top of the trophy was a little duck!

“Who doesn’t love that they have saved ducks?” Nicole Mork said. “That is just a good community endeavor.”

Drunkenly diving over the dam

A man from Wales got really lucky during his visit to the Hoover Dam. He became the first person ever to go across the dam and live to tell about it.

Arron Hughes, 28, apparently had been partying in Vegas before he decided to take a swim.

“It was around 45-40 degrees outside and we were on a stag do in Vegas. You go to Vegas to have fun, don’t you? We made The Hangover look tame,” he told the Daily Post.

About 275 people have reportedly died in the past 10 years attempting to do the same.

“I don’t have any regrets,” Hughes told BBC. “I even have a tattoo saying ‘no regrets,’ that’s the type of person I am.”

Two talented cats

Near Detroit, Will and Lauren Powers own two cats. They’re not just any cats, though. They’re record-breaking cats.

“Arcturus Aldebaran Powers holds the Guinness World Records mark for tallest domestic cat, measuring at about 19 inches (48 centimeters),” the Associated Press reported. “Housemate Cygnus Regulus Powers holds the record for the domestic cat with the longest tail, measuring more than 17 inches (43 centimeters).”

Both the cats are 2 years old and fantastic.

“They are so much fun and are their own little celebrities. People will often want to take photos with them so we will charge and donate them to the Ferndale Cat Shelter,” Powers said to The Detroit News.
