GSS to hear from OU VP for Student Affairs, talk DACA policy

This Tuesday, Vice President for Student Affairs Jason Pina will attend the Ohio University Graduate Student Senate meeting, where the body will go over two resolutions as well as old business from their last meeting.

At their last meeting, GSS welcomed many new members, officially inducting them to the senate body. At this week’s meeting, GSS will bring the new “Freedom of Expression” policy to the student body and go over resolutions.

GSS President Maria Modayil will address President Donald Trump’s plans to end the DACA program. The program, which was created by former President Barack Obama, protects young, undocumented students.

“I was actually contacted by the president of GSS at Bowling Green University plus other universities about this issue,” Modayil said.

Modayil and the student government at GSS will address a resolution for the DACA program Tuesday.

Currently, Modayil said, there is not an immigration lawyer for Ohio University students. GSS plans to bring their idea of hiring a legal consultant for OU’s campus to Pina. They hope Pina’s status as vice president for student affairs, as well as the university’s interim chief diversity officer, will allow him to push this idea forward in a positive light.

GSS meets bi-weekly and will join together on Tuesday in Walter 235.
