GSS will hear from OU President Duane Nellis

Ohio University Graduate Student Senate will hear from OU President Duane Nellis and vote on two resolutions Tuesday at the first meeting of the year.

Nellis, who has made an effort to meet with leaders of GSS and Student Senate in the past, will start the meeting.

“I believe in shared governance and having as many different voices at the table as possible,” he said in a previous Post report. “I intend to frequently engage with all the senates, in addition to my interactions with many others in the Bobcat Family.”

GSS leaders are also excited to work with Nellis this year and build a positive relationship with him. GSS President Maria Modayil said since Nellis became president, he has been inclusive of students and listens to their opinions.

“He has personally met with me and some Execs, (he) recognizes me at every public occasion, and has been open to listening and having conversations with the graduate students,” she said in the previous Post report. “I give him all credit for including us in the process and being open to new ways to include student voices as he is establishing his initiatives.”

Becky Salami, GSS vice president for communication, said Nellis has been interested in hearing the concerns of graduate students.

“The president has been very enthusiastic about working with GSS and hearing the concern of graduate students,” she said in an email. “He will be coming to our first General body meeting this year and we plan to establish regular contact with the president's office.”

In addition to hearing from Nellis, GSS will vote on two resolutions and two budget requests. The first resolution is to appoint more than 30 new members to the GSS body. The second resolution would amend the internal Rules and Procedures document to include language that would allow a first reading of certain resolutions.

The two budget requests would give about $24 to the English Graduate Student Organization for Better Bystander Training in the department and would allow GSS to spend $175 on a retractable banner.
