Student Senate: Body reinforces commitment to sustainability

Ohio University Student Senate passed a resolution to reinforce the Senate Appropriations Commission’s commitment to sustainability at its second meeting of the year Wednesday evening.

SAC will now require all of its funded events adhere to the Office of Sustainability’s definition of a “Green Event” when possible.

The second part of the resolution requires SAC to have a representative from the Environmental Affairs Commission at every general body meeting to advise SAC to fund applications with the best sustainable practices.

“We’re not really trained to make these decisions, so they’ll be there to help us out and make the best effort OU can to be a green event,” said SAC Commissioner Haley Klier, a primary sponsor of the resolution.

During his president’s report, Student Senate President Landen Lama addressed a piece of legislation that will be introduced in the statehouse concerning free speech on college campuses.

He said he was proud of OU President Nellis for traveling to Washington, D.C. advocating DACA.

“I hope we can all say we’re super proud of our university president, President Nellis,” Lama said. “He’s very student-centered.”

A resolution to amend the SAC Commissioner’s general body requirements passed, which means the SAC Commissioner must attend every general body meeting and will be allowed one vote.

“It doesn’t make sense for a voting member to only have a vote every two weeks,” Klier said.

Because it passed, the resolution to form the Committee on Community and Social Activity will create a group required by the rules and procedures “necessary to further the personal development” of the senate body, according to the resolution.

The committee will be staffed by Abby Siatkowski, Joe Frate, Matt Mamone, Connor Attrell, Olivia Mirich, Zachary Weeks and Lydia Ramlo.

The body voted to appoint La Ron Jones as South Green Senator on the Residence Life Commission.

Lama said Jones has been “great so far” in expressing interest in the commission.

A resolution to redefine the titles of SAC senators and delegates also passed.

All nine senators under the Financial Affairs Committee will now be referred to as Senator or Delegate At-Large for Senate Appropriations. The rules and procedures will be updated to reflect that change.
