Thread the Needle: Emmy's red carpet rundown

As I watched the red carpet before the Emmy’s, I’ll admit I was keeping an eye out for the regular fashionistas. Among these were Mandy Moore, who stars in Freeform’s breakout series This Is Us, regular style icons Reese Witherspoon and Gabrielle Union, the ever glamorous Nicole Kidman, along with my personal favorites Lea Michelle and America Ferrera. Nicole Kidman lived up to the hype while Mandy Moore fell flat.

One thing was certain – the kids showed up the adults.

The adults at the Emmy’s mailed it in this year: Sarah Paulson from American Horror Story wore shoulder pads, Anna Chlumsky posed in mismatched silver fabrics and Reese Witherspoon threw on an ill-fitting suit jacket she turned into a dress for the occasion. It’s like Halloween decided to come early this year, and these adults on the red carpet chose trick.

The cast of the youth-driven Netflix Original Stranger Things was the one saving grace of my red carpet viewing. Caleb Mclaughlin especially stood out in his purple tuxedo and Millie Bobby Brown was reminiscent of a ballerina in her Calvin Klein by Appointment dress. The cast had occasion to steal the show, as Stranger Things was nominated for 18 awards.

Another standout child actor to hit the red carpet was Modern Family actor Jeremy Maguire, wearing a dapper black tux with an electric blue bowtie, and an age appropriate blue cape. This was, without a doubt, the best accessory of the night. The worst accessory award was equally as easy to assess, and it goes to Heidi Klum for those oddly tribal stack of bracelets on each hand. She even has oversized tribal hoop earrings to match.

One of the best outfits of the night, and one of the worst were from the same popular sitcom, Black-ish. Yara Shahidi stunned in a custom Prada gown. The skin tone tulle fabric was the perfect backdrop for the sequin applique that adorned her dress, and her natural makeup complimented the soft silhouette. Yet there was so much wrong with the dress that Shahidi’s costar, Tracee Ellis Ross wore, I don’t even know where to begin. First, its feathers. Second of all, the feathers are placed in such a low spot, that the entire silhouette is awkward. As if one fashion faux pas is not enough, she had to add a shiny, clunky belt. This is not fashion. This is a game show called how many ugly silver accessories can I fit on my body.

Let’s hope for a better red carpet showing at the Oscars.
