Homecoming is finally here. It’s the magical weekend when alumni come back to Athens to revel in their college-years nostalgia, current students find an excuse to drink before 8 a.m. and everyone in the greater-Athens area finds a way to add a “u” to every wOUrd with an “o.”
The theme this year is "Back in the mix, back on the bricks." Several events will take place this weekend, starting with a Yell Like Hell pep rally at the Baker Center parking lot Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
Here are some tips to make the most of the ultimate green-and-white weekend:
Get in touch with old friends sooner than later
With fewer than 72 hours to spend in Athens, it’s difficult to meet up with all your old friends and do all your favorite Athens activities. Whether you’re a current student trying to meet up with a recent graduate or a former Bobcat looking to hang out with classmates from 50 years ago, make your plans before it's too late.
Don’t forget about the eggs
Eggs go with kegs for a reason. Even people who aren’t breakfast lovers should opt for some pancakes and scrambled eggs Saturday morning. You're going to need something in your belly to soak up those early-morning beers, or you may have to forfeit your football tickets for some time in front of a trash can.
Take it easy Friday night
It’s easy to get ahead of yourself and want to start off the weekend with a crazy Friday night. But if you don’t want to sleep through your kegs and eggs party and the Homecoming Parade, that may not be the best idea.
Pack a rain jacket
As of the current weather forecasts, there may be literal rain on our parade. So bring a rain jacket or umbrella along with your Bobcat fan gear.
Keep in mind the extra people in town
Union Street Diner or Bagel Street Deli may sound like a great idea for a Sunday morning brunch, but that may also be a great idea to many other students and alumni. Lines will probably be longer for bars and restaurants, so give yourself some extra waiting time.
Note the parking situation
Finding a place to park in Athens is a pain and is even worse during Homecoming weekend. Before you end up with a parking ticket, figure out where you can legally park or plan to carpool.
