Football: The numbers behind Ohio's dominating 48-3 win

Ohio's 48 points on the scoreboard only partially told the story of the complete and total blowout of Kent State.

In a dominating 48-3 win Saturday at Peden Stadium, the Bobcats turned a slow start into their most dominating victory since a 59-0 drubbing of FCS opponent Hampton to open the season. Here are some of the numbers behind Ohio's thrashing of Kent State.

336:

The number of rushing yards for Ohio. The Bobcats rushed on the backs of Dorian Brown, A.J. Ouellette and Nathan Rourke. The three rushed for 108, 91 and 59 yards, respectively.

The Bobcats rushed for 335 last weekend in a 48-30 win at Bowling Green, which was a then-season high. Ohio had four rushers go over 50 yards rushing against Kent State, too.

7:

The number of consecutive drives for Ohio that ended up with points from the beginning of the second quarter to the start of the fourth quarter.

Ohio's first three drives on the day ended up in a fumble and two punts. But from the time Ohio took over with 14:47 left in the second quarter, each drive ended up with either a touchdown or a field goal.

That drive, which ended in a punt, stopped with 13:09 left in the fourth quarter with most of the backups in the game.

6:

The number of minutes in which Ohio scored four touchdowns in a stretch in the middle of the third quarter.

Up 13-3, Ohio scored four touchdowns in six minutes and 10 seconds to extend the lead to 41-3 headed into the fourth quarter. From Dorian Brown's 39-yard run to Rourke's pass to Mason Morgan, the Bobcats quickly ran away from the Golden Flashes.

3.1:

The number of yards per play Kent State averaged. Golden Flashes quarterback George Bollas struggled on the day and went just 6-of-14 for 61 yards.

His running game didn't do much better as they averaged just 2.8 yards per carry. On 37 carries, the Golden Flashes gained just 102 yards. As an offense, they gained just 166.

5:

The number of times that Ohio has now scored over 40 points this season. That number is the most that has happened under coach Frank Solich. Previous teams had only reached that number four times.

Ohio has also eclipsed the 50-point plateau twice this season, once in the season opener against Hampton and once again in the Sept. 30 matchup against UMass.

76:

The number of points that the Bobcats have outscored their opponents by in the third quarter alone. Helped by the 28-point outburst on Saturday, the Bobcats have ran away from teams as their games wear on.

"I think we’ve shown that we’re pretty good in the third quarter coming out of that halftime," Rourke said. "I think we cleaned up our mistakes. I think the reason why we started off so slow was that we kept on shooting ourselves in the foot with penalties and unnecessary sacks.”

40.75:

The number of points per game Ohio has scored through eight games this season. That leads the Mid-American Conference, above Western Michigan.

That's the highest points per game from an offense that Solich has ever had.

9:

The number of straight seasons Ohio has earned bowl eligibility. For the Bobcats, however, that's still not the end goal. In fact, that might be the one number that Solich didn't care about.

"There was no talk about winning this game and being bowl eligible," Solich said. "I did talk to the team prior to the game and I mentioned that to them. I think that's a great step for our program. We don't even consider that. We don't even think about that."
