Freshman Firsts: 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'

I see you shiver with antici…

Pation.

If you haven’t figured it out at this point, I spent last Thursday night at The Union experiencing The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time. I had never even seen the movie, so I had no idea what to expect. However, my friend was a member of the chorus, or as it’s known in the production, the “whorus,” so I got a brief preview of a few of the dances. Needless to say, that did not prepare me in the slightest for what I was about to encounter.

The excitement did not start when the show did. It started in line. The line, fittingly with the show, is crazy. If you want to get a good spot, you will probably be waiting for a good two hours. Not to worry, the myriad of unique outfits and dancers coming to entertain the line passes the time. I also suggest getting Whit’s or Goodfella’s Pizza for the wait. Lights, dancers and The Weeknd were the first things that hit me after passing the door threshold.

The show starts off with the virgin sacrifices, which I won’t say anything else about in order to keep the ambiguity and shock factor alive. The professionalism and talent of the entire cast floored me, and I am pretty sure I didn’t sway my eyes away from the stage once. Even if the risqué material is not for you, it is done in a tasteful way that kept me hooked (and willing to stand for a straight three hours). There is an electric energy shared throughout everyone in the room, like we are all having this experience together, that makes it all the more memorable.

Whether you have seen it one time or seven, I believe it is a timeless experience that brings something new every time. This is exactly why I couldn’t resist giving myself over to absolute pleasure and going Saturday to see it again.
