This year was the best year music has seen in awhile. Here are some of 2017’s best that I’ve been playing lately:
“Sadderdaze”- The Neighbourhood
This is the most genuine track off The Neighbourhood’s September EP, Hard. It’s honest, open and a little bit more indie than the band’s usual stuff. This is one of my favorite new alternative songs this fall.
“Praying”- Kesha
Kesha fires back at Dr. Luke after years of being held captive by his record label, unable to produce music, while battling out a sexual harassment lawsuit in the court room. The beauty of this song, however, is that it is not at all bitter. It is representative of letting go of what you can’t control and forgiving those who have wronged you.
“All My Heroes”- Bleachers
A highpoint on Bleachers’ new record, Gone Now, this track is reminiscent of hits from previous records while displaying frontman Jack Antonoff’s talent as a producer that blares through on everything he touches (see Lorde’s Melodrama, St. Vincent’s Masseduction and Taylor Swift’s 1989).
“Supercut”- Lorde
Melodrama is all around flawless, but "Supercut" is a standout. It’s a breakup song that’s not a ballad or an angry rant; it simply explains how everything went south with beautiful new age production, well-written lyrics and unique vocals.
“Wall of Glass” – Liam Gallagher
The famous Oasis singer releases a shining solo project. He may not get along well enough with his brother to reunite the ‘90s stars, but at least his voice hasn’t been silenced. “Wall of Glass” was a standout track on this month’s release, As You Were.
"Young Dumb & Broke" – Khalid
There’s a reason Khalid is all the rage right now. The young rapper proves what he’s got with this slowed-down, melodic millennial anthem. He’s the next big thing.
“Sorry” – Halsey
Halsey’s new record, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, is a bit more pop than I had hoped for; it doesn’t hold a candle to Badlands, but “Sorry” is the perfect ballad for singles everywhere. Halsey reveals her struggle to accept love, a relatable one.
“Dark Side of the Gym” – The National
The National’s new record, Sleep Well Beast, is similar to its previous works. This track is just as deep and dark as any National song, but it’s particularly well-crafted.
“Beautiful People Beautiful Problems (feat. Stevie Nicks)” – Lana Del Rey
The queen of all queens, Stevie Nicks, joins Lana Del Rey on her trippy new album. This track is classic Del Rey. Vintage, soothing and insightful.
“The Breakup” – LANY
Perfect for October, this is an upbeat track with eerie undertones that will leave you haunted. “You think you wanna be, you wanna be alone/Just wait until you’re crying on the bathroom floor…It’s never the same, love, don’t try to make up.”
