Thread the Needle: Kylie Cosmetics vs. CVS makeup

We have all watched Batman vs. the Joker, Apple vs. Samsung and Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West have their epic battles. Batman triumphs over the Joker, Apple crushed Samsung and Kanye annihilated Taylor Swift over Snapchat. Today, another infamous duo steps into the ring:

Kylie Cosmetics vs. Drugstore.

As someone who has a full drawer full of designer makeup, I had a pretty clear winner already in my mind. I also have seen all nine seasons of Keeping up with the Kardashians, so I was rooting for my girl Kylie. Having spent hundreds of dollars on the entire Kylie birthday line, it would also be kind of embarrassing if I could have just took a stroll down to CVS instead of frantically refreshing the Kylie Cosmetics webpage for hours of my life.

In order to give this match its proper due, I tested both the Kylie Cosmetics matte liquid lipstick in Koko K, and the Maybelline matte liquid lipstick in Lover. I noticed right away from swatching the two looks that the colors were almost a perfect match.

Day one: Kylie Cosmetics.

Just from a pure aesthetic point of view, there is no denying how luxurious Kylie cosmetics packaging is.The box looks like liquid gold, I just want to bathe in it. It is also super recognizable, so when my floormates wandered into my room, I got lots of oohs and aahs, which just feels nice, people! When you wear a bold lip color, a boost of confidence before you step outside is always appreciated.

Before I put this on, I layered chapstick on as a base. The liquid glided on easily, and dried swiftly. However, throughout the day, my lips became super dry and chapped despite the added precaution of chapstick. The formula still looked smooth for another few hours, but it just felt uncomfortable, and I was very aware I had it on. I do need to say that I put this lipstick through the ringer. I had red passion tea in the morning, and nachos for lunch and by the end of the school day I still had visible color left on my lips. That is a very impressive feat.

Day two: Maybelline.

Just like with the Kylie lipstick, I put on some chapstick before applying the Maybelline. Although the applicator was very usable, and the formula went on easily, the lipstick did not react well with the chapstick, and came out very clumpy. So, I had to take it off and try again sans chapstick. This time, it stayed flat on my lips. Right away I noticed the difference because it didn’t dry as quickly as the Kylie formula. This ended up being a blessing, especially since I couldn’t apply chapstick, because my lips didn’t feel dry or chapped at all. The formula also kept its dewy finish all day.

Ultimately, I shocked myself in this little experiment, and ended up loving the Maybelline product. It was just as long lasting, and felt even more comfortable for all day wear. The $7.99 price tag doesn’t hurt, either. However, don’t feel bad if you shelled out the extra money for a Kylie lip kit. After all, just think of the Instagram possibilities.
