Comedy show to bring 'Full House' to MemAud

For eight seasons in the '80s and '90s, Dave Coulier portrayed the aspiring stand-up comedian Joey Gladstone on Full House, also known by many of the TV show’s fans as Uncle Joey. This Dads Weekend, Coulier’s real-life comedy talent brings him to the Ohio University stage.

Coulier will perform Saturday at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, as a special add-on event for Dads Weekend. He will be accompanied by fellow comedian Becky Robinson to present “An Evening of Comedy.”

Since the cancellation of Full House, Coulier has still been very active in reality TV, on shows such as The Surreal Life and Skating With Celebrities, and voice work in animated shows such as Robot Chicken and Bob & Doug.

Andrew Holzaepfel, senior associate director of student activities, said the choice to bring in Coulier was made with influence and recommendation from other venues where Coulier had performed.

The previous venues “felt he delivered a very funny show and was appealing to all ages from his popular television shows,” Holzaepfel said.

For many, another enjoyable element of Coulier’s work is that it’s age-appropriate.

“His agency recommended him specifically for Dads Weekend because of the clean stand up show he delivers,” Holzaepfel said.

Coulier has also been featured in the 2013 stand-up comedy recording The Clean Guys of Comedy. His focus on age-appropriate comedy allows audiences of all ages to enjoy his work, including his own children.

Some students have a similar appreciation for Coulier’s work.

Bradleigh Aeh, a freshman studying photojournalism, said “his character (on Full House) was always goofy and his stand up would be worth seeing.” His goofy nature “is a reflection of his style as a comedian,” she said.

Aeh said Coulier as Joey used to be one of her favorite characters in the TV show, because “his character was also very tender and sweet, which only made it better.”

Junior journalism major Sherman Ingram said he used to watch Full House and that he feels like Coulier coming to campus is a perfect decision for Dads Weekend.

Ingram said the show will be a great place for the student to bring their parent and enjoy a night of comedy together.

“Many people find their dads as their favorite comedian,” Ingram said. “So why not take him to some place where you can both have a laugh?”
